Graduated Drivers License Class G

What is a Graduated Class G Drivers License?

If you are at least 16, but less than 18 years of age you will be issued a graduated driver license that is valid to operate with restrictions any vehicle that does not require a motorcycle or commercial driver license.

To apply for a graduated license you must have held an Arizona instruction permit for at least six months. The permit must be valid at the time of application. You must also have satisfactorily completed an Arizona driver education program approved by MVD, or your parent or guardian must certify in writing that you have completed at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night.

Note: A parent or legal guardian will be required to assist a teen driver in applying for and earning a Graduated Driver License. An explanation of a parent's or legal guardian's roles and responsibilities can be found here.

An applicant holding an out-of-state driver license is exempt from the driver education / driving practice and instruction permit requirements. The applicant will be required to follow the restrictions stated above for the first six months that the original Class G license is held.

The holder of a graduated license is not required to obtain an operator license at age 18, but may choose to obtain one.

Documents Required

• Birth Certificate (original or certified copy), or valid US Passport
• Social Security Card (or at least know the SS#)
• Document with applicants name and current address
• Parent(s) of child under 18 will be required to sign application
  • Only one Natural/Adoptive parent if both biological parents are currently married
  • Only one Natural/Adoptive parent with sole custody
  • Both Natural?adoptive parents with joint custody
  • Full legal guardian (Proof Required)

New: Wireless Communication Restrictions
Effective July 1, 2018

Instruction Permit holders may not use a wireless communication device for any reason except during an emergency in which stopping the vehicle is impossible or will create an additional emergency or safety hazard.
For the first six months, a person that holds a Class G license may not drive a motor vehicle using a wireless communication device for any reason except:
during an emergency in which stopping the vehicle is impossible or will create an additional emergency or safety hazard.
when using an audible turn-by-turn navigation system under specified conditions.
